In the portrait: a man
black eyes wide, lips apart.
freedom and hope and death
are always in his eyes.
I think of school (coin copies)
in oily blue and red
the ten cent lyre tail
unwinds on butcher’s wrap.
When I put the paper down
he is there too, underneath it
offering his face to wear to
give his likeness to the paper.
